2024’s Oscar-winning film for best adapted screenplay, American Fiction, is written and directed by Cord Jefferson.
The film is based on the novel “Erasure” by Percival Everett
The story is about a dejected novelist, Monk, who’s fed up with the publishing community that profits from Black entertainment that relies on tired and offensive tropes at the cost of poor writing skills. To prove his point, he uses a pen name to write an outlandish Black book of his own on a whim, a book that puts him at the centre of the hypocrisy he loathes, all while balancing his dysfunctional family dynamics.
The writing smartly balances the film to be a punchy satire along with being an intimate domestic drama about the protagonist’s (Monk) familial relationships.
