2023’s indie breakout, Past Lives, written and directed by debutant Celine Song, is a semi-autobiographical romance drama that won an Oscar nomination for best original screenplay.
The film is about two childhood friends (Nora and Hae Sung) who get separated after Nora’s family decides to emigrate to the USA. Decades later, they are reunited for one fateful week as they confront destiny, love and the choices that make a life.
As per writer-director Celine Song, the script was structured as three goodbyes. Each Act has a goodbye concerning the reuniting of Nora and Hae Sung.
