New Reports

IMSDB is a great place to look for screenplays and study them, Since version 0.3.4, we have had the ability to import existing screenplays into Scrite. You can also find an article on this website where we have described in detail how you can import a screenplay from a text file downloaded from IMSDB.

A few weeks ago, Prashanth downloaded the screenplay of “The Matrix” from IMSDB and imported it into Scrite; because it’s is favorite film. The Fountain importer in Scrite got most of the elements right, but some manual formatting changes were necessary here and there.

In this post we want to take you through some of the new reports in version 0.4.6 beta.

Firstly, you will notice that the Reports menu looks very different from the previous versions.

As we started adding more reports to Scrite, we figured that the report names seemed rather confusing. So we now feature a small description below the report name in the menu itself, so that you can figure out which report to pick.

With version 0.4.6 beta, we now have the following new reports.

  • Character Screenplay
  • Location Screenplay and
  • Screenplay Subset

All of these reports help you extract a subset of the screenplay into a PDF or ODT file. These reports were developed based on user feedback.

Character Screenplay

With this report you can extract a subset of scenes from the screenplay in which one or more characters are featured. The characters may or may not have a dialogue in the scene. This report is useful if you want to hand out a subset of your screenplay to an actor portraying a specific character in the screenplay.

When you select the “Character Screenplay” option from under the Reports menu and switch to the “Characters” tab in the dialog box, you will notice a character filter list.

Here I can select one or more characters from the list to filter scenes by those characters. You can optionally enable “Character Notes” and “Highlight dialogues in yellow background” to get rich reports. Upon clicking Generate, you will get a report with just the selected character(s) scenes.

Location Screenplay

With this report, you can extract a subset of scenes from the screenplay, filtered by their location as stated in the scene-heading (or slugline).

When you select the “Location Screenplay” option from under the Reports menu and switch to the “Locations” tab in the dialog box, you will notice a location filter list.

Upon selecting one or more locations in this list and clicking “Generate”, you will get a screenplay filtered by location.

Screenplay Subset

With this report, you can extract a custom subset of scenes from the screenplay.

When you select the “Screenplay Subset” option from under the Reports menu and switch to the “Scenes” tab in the dialog box, you will notice a scene filter list.

You can select one or more scenes from this list and extract a subset of your screenplay as PDF.

Download the latest beta and try this feature. Let us know what you think.
